One of the oddest things about modern culture is the tendency to criticize others for the act of criticism. Imagine a man sitting on the end of a tree branch. He looks around at others, telling them that they shouldnt cut off their branches. Meanwhile, this man is sawing his own branch off. That is the image I have in mind when people criticize others for criticizing others, or judge others for judging others, or tell people not to believe in telling others what not to believe. It is very odd and confusing. Its like watching people drive a car...

COLUMBUS, Ohio/WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama warned Republican lawmakers on Wednesday against delaying action on his jobs plan until the 2012 elections even as they intensified criticism of his $447 billion proposal. "The next election is 14 months away, and we don't have the luxury of waiting that long," Obama told 3,000 people in Ohio, home state of House of Representatives Speaker John Boehner, the top Republican. Obama and the Republicans are now fighting their third major budget battle of the year, after a near-government shutdown in April, heart-stopping talks that produced a last-minute deal to avert a government...

On Monday, Chancellor Angela Merkel said she was "glad" about the killing of Osama bin Laden. Now, though, criticism of the comment is mounting -- even within her own party. German Foreign Minister Westerwelle, meanwhile, is calling on the West to be careful in its reaction to the news. As the news broke late Sunday night that the world's leading terrorist, Osama bin Laden, had been killed during a US raid on a compound in Pakistan, Americans took to the streets to celebrate the demise of the figurehead behind the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, which left more than...

I just posted a challenge for Freepers, to come up with one substantive policy that they disagree with Governor Palin. Just as I thought, very few if any came up with a criticism of her stance on any one policy. And the ones that did, were not fully informed. For example Palin is against illegal immigration and for securing the border. She stood with the state of Arizona and Governor Brewer against the DOJ, the Obama administration and the nation of Mexico's law suit. In most cases it was based on polling, her support of Mccain, leaving office early and...

The organized tactics of intimidation by the public employee unions in Wisconsin last week came as no surprise to me. I'm from New York, one of the most union-friendly states in the country, and I've seen the negative effects of unions my entire life. I dislike unions. But I didn't always feel that way. My first job as a 16-year old grocery store shelf-stocker was a union job. I grew up in a union household; my father was an employee of one of the Big Three automakers. Although he wasn't active in union politics, he worked in a "union shop"...

By: Jay Donnie Darko is, on its most basic level, a film that is homage to 80s culture. Its a cult classic (like many 80s films!) that references other 80s films, uses popular 80s film themes, and is set in 1988. But that is not all Donnie Darko is about. The film also makes statements about the socio-political and cultural developments of the late 80s, the reversal of family roles, etc., as well as being a superhero film, or more properly, an anti-super-hero narrative. Its also a film that presents the age-old debate about predestination and free will; it posits...

Former President George W. Bush says criticism from some, including prominent rapper Kanye West, that his handling of the 2005 Hurricane Katrina showed he did not care about black people represented "an all-time low." In his memoir, "Decision Points," to be released next Tuesday, Bush writes that charges flung at him that he was a racist during the Katrina crisis "was the worst moment of my presidency." In excerpts of an interview of Bush by NBC's "Today" show, the former president was asked about West's comment that "George Bush doesn't care about black people." The accusation arose because many blacks...
